Temporomandibular joint

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a complex joint that allows both rotation and translation. Problems with this joint can lead to difficulties with speaking, chewing and functioning in daily life. When non-surgical treatments do not provide sufficient relief, replacement of the joint may be necessary.

Patient-specific reconstruction, tailored to anatomy and movement

Designed for controlled and smooth movement

The TMJ implant is designed on the basis of the patient’s CT data and has been developed in collaboration with the University Medical Centre Groningen. The implant consists of several components that together ensure controlled and smooth movement of the joint:

  • The cranial and mandibular components are 3D-printed in titanium

The titanium components closely follow the shape of the jaw and skull, allowing the implant to fit the patient’s anatomy precisely. Fixation is tailored to the local bone quality and thickness, with locking screws providing stable and reliable anchorage. This simplifies placement in the operating theatre and contributes to a predictable and stable result.
